diseases – diseases communicable from pigs to man
There are a number of zoonotic diseases of the pig. While most of these rarely infect man, it is important to understand that these diseases exist.
Anthrax, Brucellosis, Camplyobacter jejuni, Chagas’ Disease – Trypanosoma cruzi, Clamydia, Clostridium
perfringens type A, Erysipelas, Escherichia coli, Japanese B encephalitis, Louping ill,
Leptospirosis, Nipha disease, Pasteurellosis, Rabies, Ringworm, Salmonellosis, Streptococcus suis II, Swine Influenza, Taenia solium, Toxoplasmosis
Trichinella spiralis, Tuberculosis, Vesicular diseases, Yersina
enterocolitica
Serious diseases of the pig
There are a few very serious diseases of the pig which would have extremely serious effects on the pig both in its health and for the economics of the country.
These diseases include, Foot and Mouth Disease, Classical and African Swine Fever, Aujeszky’s Disease (Pseudorabies) and Brucellosis.
It is important that your veterinarian is called if the pig presents with:
Blisters or vesicles on the feet or snout
Dies suddenly with a blood rash on its body
Does not respond to your treatment within 3 days
Check with your veterinarian on any testing procedures that may be necessary before moving your pig as tests may be required to check for these and other locally important diseases.
