Digestive problems

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea can be a serious problem in the young pig and it is best to consult with your veterinarian for advice.  In majority of cases it is not the diarrhoea that kills, it is dehydration.   In growing and adult pigs, diarrhoea occurs with overfeeding or the feeding of poor quality feed – for example feed that contains mould.

Teeth problems

A number of facial conformation problems can exist with overshot and under-shot jaws.  Poor teeth alignment results in deformation and uneven wear of teeth.  Only pigs with normal faces should be used for breeding.  Pigs on pasture will often chew stones which can lead to damage of their molar teeth.

The tusks, particularly in the boar will continue to grow throughout the pig’s life.  A pig, particularly a mature boar will keep his tusks extremely sharp.  Routine examination and cutting will be required.
