Farrowing – heating and piglet care

Using a creep area (if you are using a heat pad)

The following provides guidance for providing heating to the piglet.

The important consideration is that the piglet requires an ambient temperature of 30C

The sow/gilt however, requires an ambient temperature of 16-18C

1 day pre-farrow Room temp 20C	Farrowing
Prepare farrowing area. Turn on creep light	Turn on rear heat lamp
End of farrowing Room temp 18C	Farrowing to 1^st 2 days post-farrowing Room temp 18C
Turn off rear heat lamp when farrowing finishes	Remove rear heat lamp.
Farrowing 2days end of first week Room temp 18C	Farrowing end 1^st week to weaning Room temp 16C
	Consider combining litters after day 14.
