Breeding stalls greatly assist controlled mating of gilts. They comply with EU requirements as the gilts are only held for 2 hours. |
Once identified in oestrus the gilt is placed in the holding pen and removed from boar contact for at least one hour. They are placed in the breeding stalls and a boar is placed in front of them and they are breed individually by artificial insemination. |

After second mating the gilt is placed in a gestation area. As with gestating sows a variety of options are available. However, the gilt should be retained in the breeding area at least until pregnancy is confirmed. Note the boars are housed as far from the oestrus checking area as possible. |
