  • The following describes a breeding program for stalled sows.
  • The scenario is 4 days post weaning - an ideal breeding day

Breeding area set up:

Note stall design incorporating a boar hide. These are set up every third sow. Boar walkway at the head end of the sow. Excellent lighting is essential for good mating.
Controlled boar gates. These are operated from the stockman's, passageway at the rear of the sow and held in place by metal runners.

Ensure:

Breeding routine:

Boar in front but sows to be served cannot see him. Boar exposed to the sow. Very quick response to standing heat.
Apply the belt. Not too slack. Collect the catheter and flatpack. Insert the catheter and flat pack.
Ensure the correct position of flat pack- sows are individuals. The sow now self serves.
Some extra attention for a few sows. Check flow of semen. Finish breeding. Bend catheter over into flatpack. Mark sow.

Move boar 1. Introduce boar 2. Remove catheter. Remove belt. Keep boar presence.
