Check semen
availability and storage. Prepare for
insemination |
Remove the
boar for one hour. Reintroduce the sow to the boar. Note sow’s behaviour |
Demonstrate
the standing reflex and other signs of oestrus. |

Take out the
semen bag and place onto catheter |
Place gel onto
the catheter avoid the exit hole |
Introduce
catheter into the sow note in the presence of the boar |

Stimulate the
sow by touch and voice |
Keep
stimulating the sow do not worry to much about the speed of insemination |
The semen will
be seen to start entering the sow after 90 seconds. Slightly longer in gilts |

Semen enters
the sow in waves, both forward and back |
As the semen delivery
ends seal the catheter |
After breeding
allow the sow 5 to 10 minutes to settle before removing catheter |
